What it is

Wi-Fi survey and installation of dedicated wired access points (or high-quality mesh systems where cabling isn't practical), designed and positioned to give strong, fast Wi-Fi to every room, garden and outbuilding. Includes PoE cabling, ceiling or wall-mount access points, controller setup and testing.

Why professional install matters

ISP routers are designed to a price point and placed by the front door where the phone line comes in, often the worst spot for whole-house coverage. A dedicated access point in the right ceiling, wired back to the router, is transformational, and permanent.

Adding another Wi-Fi extender rarely fixes a coverage problem: it just halves the speed of the room it's in. Mesh systems that use Wi-Fi to talk to each other suffer the same problem: every hop cuts throughput. The actual fix is a wired connection back to the router at every AP.

Wired access points vs mesh, the honest difference

Wired access points: every AP has its own Cat6 back to the router. Full ISP speed to every AP, no throughput lost between hops. The gold standard, and what we always recommend where cabling is feasible.

Mesh with wired back-haul: a consumer mesh system (Netgear Orbi, Ubiquiti AmpliFi, TP-Link Deco etc.) with the nodes linked by cable rather than Wi-Fi. Nearly as good as separate APs, easier to set up, works well in most homes.

Wireless mesh (no cables): the everyone-buys-this option. Convenient, but every hop halves your throughput. Fine as a last resort in a small flat; not the answer for a proper house.

We'll advise honestly on which one is right for your property on the free survey, sometimes the answer is that your existing router is fine and just needs relocating.

Where the access points go

Ideal AP positions are centred in the ceiling of the largest rooms they serve, landing (upstairs), hallway (downstairs), garden office. Wall-mount is a fine alternative where ceiling install isn't possible.

We aim for one AP per floor in most houses, with additional APs added for garden offices, converted lofts and outbuildings.

Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is our default spec, mature, well-supported by all recent phones, tablets and laptops, and dramatically better than Wi-Fi 5 in busy households with lots of devices.

Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) is worth specifying in commercial installs and for future-proofing high-end domestic. Devices supporting it are still limited in 2026, but that will change quickly.

Guest networks, VLANs and smart-home isolation

We can set up a separate guest SSID, visitors get internet but can't see your home devices or shared drives.

For families running lots of smart-home devices (cameras, plugs, thermostats), we can put them on a separate VLAN so a compromised smart plug can't reach your laptop. Optional but sensible.

Residential vs commercial

Home installs focus on discreet ceiling/wall APs and simple management. Commercial installs (cafés, salons, small offices) add captive-portal guest Wi-Fi, better bandwidth management, and often integration with a paid-for controller system for reporting.

How much does a Wi-Fi installation cost?

Depends on square footage, cable-run difficulty and number of access points needed. A typical 3-bed with two APs is a fixed-price job we'll quote after a free site survey, call 07733 555269.

How long does the installation take?

A single-AP install with easy loft access is 2–3 hours. A whole-house install with 3+ APs, cabling and controller setup is usually a full day.

Will you make a mess of my ceilings?

Access points fit flush with a small ceiling rose, the only mark is one neat 15mm hole per AP for the cable. Most cable runs are through lofts, so ceilings below don't get touched.

Can you make my garden office get Wi-Fi?

Yes, most reliable answer is an outdoor-grade Cat6 cable in armoured conduit out to the office, with an AP mounted inside. Way better than trying to blast Wi-Fi through walls.

Do I need to replace my ISP router?

Usually no, the ISP router keeps handling internet and DHCP; we just plug the access points into a spare LAN port. In some cases (very old routers) we recommend replacing.

Will my old devices still work?

Yes, Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 access points are backward-compatible with everything. The new AP won't slow anything down.

Is Wi-Fi 6 worth it?

Yes, especially in households with lots of devices (10+). Wi-Fi 6 handles many simultaneous connections far better than Wi-Fi 5.

Can you set up a guest network?

Yes, separate SSID with its own password, no access to your home devices. Standard on every install.
